Town of South Kingstown - Saugatucket River Walkway

Working closely with the Town of South Kingstown, RI and the landscape architect (Veri & Associates), Caputo and Wick Ltd. designed and permitted a pedestrian trail and boardwalk along the banks of the Saugatuck River in Wakefield.  The project was undertaken to enhance the existing linear riverside park and to provide linkage to existing trails that provided access to municipal offices, a larger riverside park, an elementary school, and the Wakefield downtown business district.  Much of the boardwalk was cantilevered over the river bank and was pile supported at the channel edge.  Careful design occurred at the existing dam and fish ladder to avoid disruption in channel flow patterns or water temperatures that could adversely affect the seasonal movements of anadromous and catadromous fish.  A separate timber canoe launch was designed and installed at the riverside as shown in the image at bottom right.  Caputo and Wick Ltd. additionally provided wetland delineation and surveying services for the project and coordinated closely with the contractor and RIDOT during construction observation phases of the project.  Wetlands permitting occurred as a joint review with CRMC and RIDEM.
