Providence Country Day Pavilion
The Providence Country Day School campus in East Providence, RI, includes a sizeable tract of undeveloped forested uplands and wetlands.  To complement the environmental education curriculum and to further introduce students to forested portions of the property, the School expanded their existing trail system and constructed a pavilion to serve as an outdoor-education classroom. The pavilion was intentionally sited in a location near the School buildings such that it could additionally serve as a sitting area for art classes and all members of the School community.  Working as part of the project team, Caputo and Wick Ltd. assisted in selecting the pavilion type, size, and location and in establishing project permitting needs and construction sequences.  We assessed existing conditions for suitability and safety, recommended a pavilion location, scheduled and attended a pre-application meeting with RIDEM, field delineated freshwater wetlands, conducted a topographic survey, prepared base mapping, witnessed soils test pits to evaluate soils properties for pavilion footings, coordinated with the local building official, developed footing details, prepared permitting and construction drawings, and prepared the RIDEM freshwater wetlands permit application.  We additionally conducted a floral inventory of approximately 13 acres of forested portions of the parcel and prepared a comprehensive table of observed species for use by faculty and students.
